A smaller map, a richer trip

Shanghai: separate skyline and street life

Do not reserve an inflexible evening show on arrival day. On the next day, limit the plan to two neighbourhood clusters and a seated lunch. Keep pavements clear when photographing the skyline. Use a confirmed indoor cultural visit as the wet-weather alternative.

Suzhou: choose a garden, then slow down

Choose one principal garden rather than budgeting half an hour for each. Store luggage first and check steps, narrow passages and exit options for wheelchairs or strollers. Travel between apparently nearby sights still takes time.

Hangzhou and the optional water-town day

Use a manageable stretch of West Lake as your base. Treat a tea-village visit or a water-town outing as an optional theme day, not two compulsory stops before a flight. Recheck boats, evening programmes and refund rules; archive accounts do not establish current availability.

Rail, hotels and meals

Choose stations alongside hotel locations, not simply the shortest train time. A two-night stay in each city limits hotel changes. If departing from Shanghai, return there the final night and remove an activity. Check restaurant pricing and dietary arrangements rather than relying on old per-person budgets. Decide between an overnight water-town stay and a day trip before booking transfers; luggage logistics differ.
